Music, chess, calligraphy and painting are the four skills that ancient Chinese literati and ladies must master. This pattern is composed of the ancient musical instrument, chess board, ancient books, and scrolls. It is also known as the “elegant gathering of four arts”. There are also patterns in which the historical figures with those skills gathered together. For example, images of the musician Yu Boya of the Spring and Autumn Period and the gods of North Dipper and South Dipper, the calligrapher Wang Xizhi of Jin Dynasty and the famous painter Wang Wei in the Tang Dynasty were jointly used to symbolize “the elegant gathering of four arts”.
